We’ve had number of regrettable incidents over the last couple of weeks. A number of plotholders’ sheds along the back fence have had their locks cut off: as far as we can ascertain, the miscreants came into the field overnight, and although several sheds were broken into only one item, a strimmer, was taken. Separately, a greenhouse in the middle of the field had some windows broken during the day.

It’s clearly difficult, if not impossible, to fully secure the field….unless anyone has any ideas? However, we do now have functioning gates at the main entrance, and we have been planting whips in the gaps along the back fence which we are hoping will grow to provide a barrier of thorns. That’s a longer-term project but one that we will continue.

Although we have no proof, it is likely that the greenhouse was vandalised by a small group of children who were seen on the field at about the time of the incident. they were spoken to later and told they aren’t welcome on the field in future.

In terms of what we can all do to minimise the impact such events, we strongly recommend that you do not keep easily-portable, saleable items, e.g. strimmers, at the field. As is evident, unfortunately shed locks have proved to be no deterrent.

Also, whilst whoever attacked the sheds probably came in through the back fence, it is likely that those who broke the greehouse glass came through the front gates so keeping them closed at all times would be helpful
